Ernesto Valverde will conclude his third tenure as Athletic Bilbao head coach following the completion of the 2025/26 LaLiga campaign. The manager, widely known as ‘Txingurri’, announced his decision through the club’s official social media channels, ending speculation regarding his future at San Mames.
The 62-year-old tactician has already cemented his place in the history of the Basque club. He holds the record for the most matches managed for the Lions and is poised to reach a significant milestone before his exit. Currently sitting on 494 games, Valverde is expected to surpass the 500 appearance mark during the final 10 matches of the domestic season.
“Next season I won’t be Athletic’s coach. It’s a decision I’ve thought about for a long time, discussed with the Club, and I wanted to share it with you,” Valverde stated.
Despite the announcement, Valverde emphasized that his focus remains on immediate competitive goals. The team is currently pushing to maintain its standing after a campaign that saw them qualify for Champions League football. Their final stretch begins this Sunday in a domestic clash against Real Betis.
The Caceres-born coach remains committed to a strong finish with Athletic Bilbao before his departure. He noted that the decision was reached through mutual agreement with the board. The club and its supporters are expected to organize a formal farewell to honor his extensive contributions to the institution across three different decades.
