Dortmund Ban Family Access After Jobe Bellingham Substitution Sparks Dressing Room Drama

28.08.2025, 09:51

Borussia Dortmund have imposed a blanket ban on family access to the dressing room after an emotionally charged confrontation involving Jobe Bellingham’s father during the club’s 3-3 Bundesliga opener against St Pauli.

With Dortmund cruising at 3-1 in the 85th minute, a late collapse saw them concede twice and settle for a frustrating draw. But the post-match fallout wasn’t just about squandered points. The spotlight quickly shifted to the tunnel, where Mark Bellingham — father and advisor to Jobe and Jude — reportedly expressed his discontent after Jobe was hauled off at half-time on his top-flight debut.

According to Sky Sports Germany, Mark Bellingham had a tense and emotional exchange with sporting director Sebastian Kehl. The frustration stemmed from both the early substitution of his 19-year-old son and the team’s collective second-half collapse. German outlet BILD further revealed that Bellingham senior attempted to confront head coach Niko Kovac directly, making his disapproval unmistakably clear.

Some Dortmund players reportedly took note of the emotionally charged atmosphere, with Bellingham’s visible frustration leaving a mark behind the scenes.

In response, Dortmund managing director Lars Ricken addressed the issue on Sky90 – The Football Debate, saying:

“We got Jobe Bellingham because we really built a relationship of trust with the parents over the years. Now the family flew in especially for their son’s first Bundesliga game and wanted to meet Jobe after the game. They stood in the hallway to the locker room and had an emotional conversation with Sebastian, which, however, is not a problem at all given this relationship.”

However, Ricken confirmed that the club will now enforce a stricter policy:

“In the future, we will ensure that only players, coaches, and officials have access to the locker room area, so that we no longer get into trouble by commenting on such news. But today everything has been resolved — no drama.”

A High-Pressure Debut for Jobe

Jobe Bellingham, who joined Dortmund this summer in a £32 million move from Sunderland, was given the start against St Pauli but was substituted at the interval after a quiet first half. Despite the promise, the teenager couldn’t make an impact in a match that spiraled out of control in the closing minutes.

Kovac was candid post-match, stating: “When you lead 3-1, then you cannot play a 3-3 even against this very good St Pauli team.”

This was Jobe’s sixth appearance for Dortmund since arriving in June. The move, which included a record £27.8 million base fee plus add-ons for Sunderland, marked a significant step in his career — though Jobe was quick to distance himself from comparisons to older brother Jude Bellingham.

Jude, now a global star at Real Madrid, also made his name at Dortmund before securing a big-money move to La Liga in 2023. Jobe, wearing the No. 7 shirt, has already featured at the FIFA Club World Cup and in domestic cup competitions. However, the Bundesliga debut — highly anticipated — lasted just 45 minutes and sparked a media firestorm that the club is now eager to move beyond.

The emotional investment from the Bellingham family was clear, but so too is Dortmund’s intent to maintain professionalism and control around the first team.

Looking Ahead

While Saturday’s game was far from the dream debut for Jobe, the teenager has ample time and potential to carve out his own path in Germany. With Dortmund’s dressing room now off-limits to emotional sideline influences, all focus must shift back to the pitch — where the real battles are won.
