NBA Insider: Cleveland Cavaliers Lead the Race to Re-Sign LeBron James

16.07.2026, 10:24

LeBron James’ next destination remains unresolved, but multiple franchises are positioning themselves around a growing consensus: the veteran forward is most likely returning to Cleveland. With James holding full control over where he lands for his 24th NBA season, teams including the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Golden State Warriors remain in contention, but the latest intel tilts toward a second homecoming in Ohio.

NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that rival teams in the mix believe Cleveland is the most probable outcome.

“From talking to Golden State, from talking to people around the Sixers, from talking to coach Chris Finch with Timberwolves … all these teams that are in the mix, they do think that LeBron is most likely to go back to where it all started in Cleveland. That is what other teams that are in on LeBron believe is his most likely outcome,”

Fischer said.

James informed the Los Angeles Lakers he intends to play the 2025-26 season with another franchise, despite the organization’s willingness to retain him. His last stint as an unrestricted free agent came in 2018 when he departed Cleveland for Los Angeles. Cleveland was among the franchises identified by James’ agent, Rich Paul, as potential destinations, and the franchise has been deliberate in preserving roster and financial flexibility in anticipation of a decision.

Teams are prepared to wait out James as he weighs options framed around personal and professional satisfaction rather than maximum salary. The Cavaliers could bring him on under a veteran mid-level deal, potentially structured as a one-year arrangement to assess fit before committing further.

Cleveland is also reportedly keeping roster spots open in connection with speculation about a possible trade involving James’ son, Bronny James, currently with the Lakers.

What a Return Would Mean for Cleveland’s Roster

A move back to Cleveland carries different stakes than James’ 2014 return. That homecoming came with the explicit mission of delivering the city its first championship. This time, the Cavaliers are already built to compete. The franchise acquired James Harden at the trade deadline, signaling a win-now posture, and their core of Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley anchors a team that reached the Eastern Conference Finals.

Adding James would give Cleveland a legitimate title-contending roster. He is not arriving as a symbolic figure. Across 60 games in the 2025-26 season, he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds. At 41, with his 42nd birthday arriving in December, his production remains meaningful and his presence on a roster with established star talent creates matchup problems that younger teams will struggle to absorb.

James confirmed he plans to play the 2026-27 season but left open the question of whether it would be his final year. Regardless of timeline, his next stop is widely understood to be his last in the league.

The Heat and Warriors maintain credible pitches, but team sources across the league are converging on the same read: Cleveland leads. Follow TipsGG for continuing coverage as James’ decision takes shape.
