Bellingham and Vinicius Clash as Real Madrid’s Champions League Exit Turns Ugly
Real Madrid crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday, but the defeat was overshadowed by on-pitch fury and post-match chaos that saw multiple players sanctioned by referee Slavko Vincic.
Madrid led 3-2 at the Allianz Arena with the tie locked at 4-4 on aggregate and extra time approaching when Aurélien Camavinga was shown a second yellow card in the 86th minute for delaying a free-kick. The dismissal proved catastrophic. Luis Diaz struck moments later, and Michael Olise added a second in stoppage time to send Bayern Munich through to face Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final.
Tensions boiled over before Camavinga’s red card. In the 83rd minute, Vinicius Junior collected the ball and drove toward goal while Jude Bellingham sprinted into the penalty area demanding a square pass. Vinicius Junior’s poor touch allowed Dayot Upamecano to close him down, and unable to execute the pass, he incensed Bellingham, who made his frustrations audible.
Vinicius Junior responded with visible anger, caught on camera telling Bellingham: “What do you want? Shut up and close your mouth.”
The chaos intensified at full-time. Arda Guler, who had scored twice, was restrained by staff as he confronted Vincic, ultimately earning a red card for his remonstrations. Antonio Rudiger and Vinicius Junior led the pursuit toward the tunnel, lambasting the referee. Dani Carvajal, who never entered the pitch, was caught shouting obscenities at Vincic.
In the mixed zone, Bellingham branded Camavinga’s dismissal “a joke.” Real Madrid boss Álvaro Arbeloa told Spanish media the referee had “ruined” an otherwise gripping encounter. “Obviously, you can’t send off a player for something like that,” Arbeloa said. “He didn’t even know he had a card and he ruined a very exciting, very evenly matched tie.”
On TNT Sport, Arbeloa elaborated: “It is really unbelievable that you send off a player for this action. It’s not possible in a match like that to be sent off for this. We feel really, really upset, angry and disappointed.”
Bayern Munich’s perspective differed sharply. Diaz told El Chiringuito TV: “I think the referee was right to send him off. We wanted to take the free kick quickly and he didn’t release the ball.”
Harry Kane netted his 50th goal of the season for Bayern Munich, becoming the first Englishman to reach that tally since Aston Villa’s Tom “Pongo” Waring in 1930-31. Kane expressed confidence ahead of the semi-final: “We feel strong, we feel like we can beat anyone when we’re at our highest level. We’re going to need that to beat PSG.”
Arbeloa accepted responsibility for the defeat, saying he would “understand” any decision Real Madrid made regarding his future. “I am the one responsible for the defeats and I will always take the consequences,” he stated. “I’m a Real Madrid man through and through. I care about this club, the players and the supporters a lot more than I care about myself.”
