Argentinian midfielder Leandro Paredes has been handed a 10-match suspension by FIFA following the incidents that erupted at the end of the World Cup final, which Argentina lost to Spain. The governing body made the announcement on Friday.

Paredes is not alone in facing punishment. Teammate Nahuel Molina received a seven-match ban and, like Paredes, must pay a $90,000 fine. Thiago Almada was also sanctioned, drawing a one-match suspension alongside a $30,000 fine.

Two team officials, Roberto Ayala and Pablo Martin Paez Gavira, were banned and fined $30,000 each for their involvement in the post-match incidents.

“In accordance with Article 69, paragraphs 2a and 3 of the Disciplinary Code, the match suspensions will be carried over to the next matches of the relevant representative teams,” FIFA specified.

The suspensions are not isolated to the individuals. The Argentinian federation itself faces a $321,000 fine stemming from the display of a banner referencing the Malvinas. FIFA cited multiple violations under its Disciplinary Code: Article 13 paragraph 2 point c) for using a sporting event to carry out non-sporting demonstrations, Article 14 paragraph 5 for inappropriate team behavior, Article 15 for discrimination and racist assaults related to discriminatory chants and gestures by supporters, and Article 17 for failure to maintain order and security during the match.
