The probability of Vinicius Jr signing for Arsenal sits at effectively zero. He will get his record contract at Real Madrid, and the knock-on effect of that deal may well destabilise Madrid’s squad balance for years. The more pressing question is who Arsenal actually pursue at left wing if that door closes.

Nico Williams has received surprisingly little attention in the public discourse. He has long been a target for Arsenal, and with Barcelona having committed their budget to Anthony Gordon, Williams remains attainable. His release clause sits at a relatively standard €100 million, making him a credible Tier 1 option. If no such target materialises, keeping Gabriel Martinelli and adding Marcus Rashford to the left-wing rotation is a workable fallback. Rashford brings qualities Arsenal currently lack: a genuine counter-attack threat and direct free-kick ability. Christos Tzolis alongside Martinelli and Rashford would give the squad usable depth.
There is also the leftfield option of revisiting Mykhailo Mudryk. If Chelsea move him at a low price following his doping ban, the upside of a potential redemption story could justify the gamble.

Will Guimarães Collect Too Many Red Cards at Arsenal?
Bruno Guimarães is a genuine quality signing, but there is a legitimate concern around his disciplinary record. Watching him against Arsenal specifically, he has been permitted to commit fouls that would attract heavier scrutiny at other clubs — including at least one forearm strike to the back of an opponent’s head. Those same challenges are unlikely to be treated as leniently once he is wearing an Arsenal shirt, and the risk of red cards is real.
If he stays disciplined, Arsenal’s midfield becomes formidable: Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Guimarães, with Mikel Merino providing versatile cover. That is a genuinely deep and balanced engine room. The Vinicius situation feels like leverage theatre regardless, and most Arsenal supporters expect either a failed pursuit or a Manchester City intervention. Whoever does fill that left-wing berth will face inevitable comparisons to a player who never actually arrived.
Liverpool Are Not Weaker — The Case Against the Regression Narrative
The argument that Liverpool face net regression this season because of losing Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konaté, and Andy Robertson does not hold up. Salah, despite his legendary status at the club, was a liability last season. He offered minimal attacking threat and consistently failed to track back, leaving Liverpool’s right flank exposed. There were passages of play where ten men would have been preferable, since others might have been forced to cover the space he vacated.
Jacquet is a solid replacement for Konaté, Leoni will return from injury, and Kostas Tsimikas — who was the backup left back during the title-winning season — is adequate cover at left back. A fully fit Alexander Isak returning to form represents a clear upgrade on what Liverpool had last year. There is still a month left in the transfer window, and further additions are probable. Calling this a regression is a stretch.
Kobbie Mainoo Has Earned His Pre-Season Rest
The debate over whether Kobbie Mainoo deserves a full three-week break despite not featuring in summer tournament football is straightforward when examined properly. He travelled extensively with the squad in conditions far from optimal for preparation, and the mental load of a high-profile international summer is real regardless of minutes played.
The Bergkamp precedent is worth invoking here. Protecting a player from accumulated fatigue during a 55-plus game season is rational squad management, not indulgence. For Manchester United, a fit Mainoo from matchday one is more valuable than any short-term fitness boost from cutting his break short. Mason Mount cannot be planned around given his injury history in central midfield. Mainoo’s quick, incisive passing and ability to drive play forward are qualities United and most other sides simply do not replicate internally. His track record off the pitch — by all accounts disciplined, professional, and mature — gives no grounds for suspicion that this break is anything other than structured preparation agreed with the club.
Premier League Predictions: A Fan’s Crystal Ball
Pre-season prediction season always produces sharp takes worth cataloguing. Among the more considered calls doing the rounds: Arsenal and Chelsea fighting out the title; Phil Foden hitting double figures in league goals; Haaland scoring in industrial quantities while appearing entirely uninterested; Spurs producing a new vintage of Spursy with their own particular flavour this year; and Leeds, Sunderland, and Newcastle owing a debt of gratitude to Ipswich, Hull, and Coventry for absorbing the worst of the bottom-end pressure. Youri Tielemans alongside Bruno Fernandes is an intriguing combination on paper. Whether it translates on the pitch is the question United fans will be watching closely from August.
