Vinicius Jr has agreed a new six-year contract with Real Madrid on improved terms, ending 18 months of negotiations that had stalled before the club submitted a fresh offer on Wednesday. The Brazil international is understood to be appreciative of the revised package.
The winger originally joined Real from Flamengo in 2018 and signed a previous contract extension three years ago. He has publicly described the club as the home of his “dreams”, and returned on Monday for his first pre-season training session and medical assessment after representing Brazil at the World Cup.
Across all competitions, Vinicius has recorded 128 goals in 375 appearances for Real, adding 13 goals in 54 caps at international level. His trophy haul at the club includes two Champions League titles, three La Liga titles, and one Copa del Rey.
Arsenal had been monitoring the situation and would have accelerated their pursuit of the Brazilian had he rejected Real’s offer. The Premier League champions must now redirect their search as they look to strengthen on the left side of attack.
The contract extension was announced on the same day Real confirmed the signing of Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig for a fee worth up to £120m (140m euros). Diomande becomes Real’s sixth summer signing under new head coach Jose Mourinho, joining Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella, and Carlos Espi.
