Arsenal Secures Marli Ellis Salmon’s Future With Professional Contract
Arsenal have confirmed that teenage defender Marli Ellis Salmon has signed a pre-contract agreement converting into a permanent deal on his 17th birthday. The 2009-born Hale End prospect has broken into Mikel Arteta’s first team this season, earning four appearances across all competitions.
Three of those outings came in the FA Cup, where Salmon made his full debut in Arsenal’s 2-1 fifth-round victory over Mansfield Town after substitute appearances against Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic. His competitive debut arrived earlier in the Champions League, when the 16-year-old came off the bench during December’s 3-0 league-phase win over Club Brugge.
The 6ft 1in defender operates at both right-back and centre-back. Salmon will become a fully-fledged professional when he turns 17 this August, following Arsenal’s earlier move to tie down fellow teenage defender Max Dowman to similar terms.
“It’s a very big moment for me, for my family as well. I’m very proud. I’ve been at the academy since I was nine and I just want to give everything to the club. I’m an Arsenal supporter, and I’ve had some great memories so far. I’m so proud to have made my debut this season, I just want to keep pushing on still, keep my levels high and try to get as much experience as I can in the first team.”
Salmon joined Arsenal’s Hale End academy at age nine in 2019. He helped the club reach the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals last year and has earned four caps for the England Under-17 side, though the Young Lions missed qualification for this season’s European Championships.
Arsenal’s Contract Priority List
Securing Salmon’s future allows Arsenal to shift focus toward players with expiring deals. Several squad members face contract decisions across the next two years.
Expiring 2027: Gabriel Jesus, Christian Norgaard, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli (one-year extension option available)
Expiring 2028: Tommy Setford, David Raya, Jurrien Timber, Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Ben White, Martin Odegaard
Jesus, Trossard, and Norgaard may not receive extension offers given their current form and age profiles. Arsenal retain the option to trigger a 12-month extension for Martinelli, though he could occupy a squad role if the club pursues a premium left-winger signing.
The 2028 expiries demand immediate attention. Odegaard, Timber, and Rice should rank among the priority extensions, while Havertz and White may rank lower due to ongoing injury concerns.
