In a move that could surprise many Premier League watchers, Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a summer swoop for Brentford’s experienced midfielder Christian Norgaard as a potential replacement for Thomas Partey.
The 31-year-old Dane, who still has two years remaining on his contract after penning an extension earlier this year, has emerged as a pragmatic option for the Gunners as they revamp their midfield unit ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Arsenal are on the brink of finalising the signing of Spanish international Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, a marquee addition expected to provide creativity and control in the heart of midfield. However, Partey’s likely exit his contract expires this month with no renewal yet agreed creates a fresh gap in the defensive midfield role that Mikel Arteta may need to urgently fill.
The Ghanaian was a mainstay last season, clocking 52 appearances in all competitions. His influence in anchoring Arsenal’s midfield cannot be understated, and losing such an integral figure leaves the club exposed in a crucial area.
That vulnerability is further heightened by the departure of Italy international Jorginho, who has already joined Flamengo in Brazil after a short but solid stint in North London. Jorginho signed off on a high, helping Arsenal edge Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Cup final last Friday.
Norgaard, meanwhile, has quietly built an impressive Premier League CV since joining Brentford in 2019. The Bees’ skipper was central to their historic promotion campaign via the Championship play-offs in 2021 and has since helped the club secure five consecutive top-flight seasons.

Last term, the combative midfielder featured 34 times under then-manager Thomas Frank who has since taken the reins at Tottenham Hotspur cementing his reputation as one of the league’s most reliable holding midfielders. Norgaard’s leadership on and off the pitch, along with his regular appearances for the Danish national team, makes him an attractive short-term fix for Arteta’s side.
Brentford, however, won’t let their captain go without a fight. With clubs circling for other key players like Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, the West London outfit may be reluctant to part with yet another cornerstone of their squad. That said, Norgaard’s age and potential interest in one final top-tier move could open the door for a discounted fee something Arsenal may capitalise on.
As the Gunners aim to strengthen squad depth and maintain their Premier League title push, this could be a low-risk, high-reward addition that brings experience and tenacity to Arteta’s midfield setup.
