The Dutchman arrived at Anfield in 2024 after guiding Feyenoord to titles in the Eredivisie and the Dutch Cup. He clinched Liverpool‘s 20th top-flight English title in his first season at the club, succeeding Jurgen Klopp with minimal squad investment — his only significant addition being Federico Chiesa from Juventus for around £10 million. His second season told a different story.
Liverpool issued a statement acknowledging Slot‘s tenure:
“The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and – most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful. At the same time, we have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward.”
“We would like to take this opportunity to place on record our appreciation for Arne, who will always hold a special place in the history of this football club as the coach who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title. He also helped guide the club through one of the most difficult periods imaginable following the loss of Diogo. The compassion and humanity he showed throughout that time said a great deal about him as a person.”
“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”
The summer prior to the failed title defence saw Liverpool spend a substantial £450 million on new players, breaking the Premier League transfer record twice — signing Florian Wirtz for £116 million and Alexander Isak for £130 million. The investment failed to translate into a coherent campaign, with the side ultimately scraping fifth place and a Champions League berth.

Tensions inside the camp were visible. Mohamed Salah, a figure of enormous standing at the club, publicly clashed with Slot over his style of play, calling for a return to “heavy metal” football. The Anfield crowd grew restless too, jeering the team on more than one occasion as results deteriorated.
Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, who guided the Cherries to a sixth-place finish, is reported to be the frontrunner to take charge at Anfield.
