The Premier League will begin publishing the findings of its independent Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel on a weekly basis, marking a significant shift toward transparency in how referee and VAR decisions are evaluated and communicated to the public.

The five-member panel was established during the 2022-23 season and is responsible for reviewing and voting on decisions made by officials across all major incidents in league matches. Previously, those judgments were shared with clubs and officials but kept from public view until last season.

The league stated the move is designed to ensure “full transparency around the evaluations of the decisions made by match officials.”

Direct Quotes and On-Field Audio Added This Season

Beyond publishing panel findings, the Premier League will share direct quotes from on-field referees and VAR operators following major incidents. These will appear on the official Premier League Match Centre social media account and represent a first for the competition. In select matches, in-game audio from cameras worn by referees will also be made available.

“Alongside the professional referees’ body, the Premier League will also continue to lobby football’s lawmakers IFAB to allow more communications from the Match Officials to be broadcast in-game.”

The push to bring more referee communication into the live broadcast environment reflects ongoing pressure from fans and clubs who have long called for greater accountability in officiating. Publishing the KMI Panel’s weekly verdicts puts those assessments on record in a way that allows public scrutiny of how decisions are graded.

Season Opener Sets the Stage

The 2026-27 Premier League season kicks off on Friday, with defending champions Arsenal facing promoted side Coventry City in the opening fixture.
