Max Eberl‘s future at FC Bayern Munich is increasingly uncertain, and now there is concrete interest from Saudi Arabia. According to Saudi newspaper Arriyadiyah, Al-Ittihad has been monitoring the 52-year-old sporting director and has already held initial talks with him over a potential move.

The Saudi club is reportedly planning to install Eberl as their new sporting director, with the move linked to a planned departure of current squad planner Ramon Planes. Talks between Al-Ittihad and Eberl have stalled, though, over differing views on the club’s future sporting direction. No agreement has been reached.
The timing matters. Eberl has been serving as FC Bayern‘s head of sport since March 2024, with his contract running until summer 2027. An extension is far from guaranteed, and the Saudi interest adds another layer of pressure to an already open situation at Säbener Strasse.
Internal Criticism Mounting Over Transfer Planning
Despite a successful season on the pitch, Eberl remains a divisive figure within the club. Multiple media reports have questioned his squad planning from last summer, and according to SPORT1, some insiders describe the process as “chaotic.” Specific criticisms include accusations that Eberl pushed to overspend and lacked consistency in negotiations with agents and players.
The financial dimension is central to the tension. FC Bayern‘s supervisory board has made salary structure stabilisation a priority and is calling for major investments to be assessed with discipline. That puts Eberl‘s approach directly at odds with the institutional direction the board is pushing.
Decision Expected at August Supervisory Board Meeting
Despite the friction, Eberl‘s position is not under immediate threat. Sport BILD reports that his future will only be discussed formally at the next supervisory board meeting in August.
Eberl himself addressed his future publicly ahead of FC Bayern‘s Champions League second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.
“I think we’ve now got some very, very good things in place. I feel very, very comfortable. They should evaluate my job. And if they think my job is good, then I’m also prepared to stay at Bayern for longer.”
The coming months will define whether Eberl extends his tenure in Munich or pivots to a major role in Saudi football. Follow TipsGG for the latest updates as the situation develops ahead of the August board meeting.
