2026 World Cup European Play-Offs: 16 Teams Battle for Four Spots
The 2026 FIFA World Cup expanded to 48 teams, and that means more nations fighting for qualification spots. Sixteen European teams will compete in the play-offs to claim the final four places available for the continent in football‘s biggest tournament.
How the European Play-Offs Work
The 16 competing nations consist of the 12 runners-up from the qualifying groups and the four highest-ranked teams from the Nations League who failed to finish in the top two of their qualifying groups.
These teams were split into four pots based on FIFA World Rankings, with the fourth pot reserved for Nations League qualifiers. Each of the four playoff paths includes one team from each pot.
In each path, the Pot 1 team faces the Pot 4 team and the Pot 2 team faces the Pot 3 team in single-legged semi-finals. Winners advance to the finals, where they meet in decisive single matches. Pot 1 and Pot 2 nations host the semi-finals, while the draw determined the host for each final. All matches go to extra-time and penalties if scores are level after 90 minutes.
The 16 Qualified Teams
Pot 1: Italy, Denmark, Turkey, Ukraine
Pot 2: Poland, Wales, Czech Republic, Slovakia
Pot 3: Ireland, Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo
