The play in teams also 4 of them come from ESL World Ranking, after the top 3, 3 teams come from ESL World Ranking EU, 2 teams from ESL World Ranking NA, 1 team from ESL World Ranking South America, 1 team from ESL World Ranking Asia, and 1 team from ESL World Ranking Oceania, the winner from Meisterschaft and 3 other affiliate event winners.
Play In
When it comes to the format from the tournament, it has 3 stages, play in, group stage, and playoffs on LAN. The first is the play in stage, that will be played on a double elimination bracket, which means that 2 losses will dictate elimination, all opening matches will be BO1, and all following matches will be BO3. 16 teams, without being the ones that were directly qualified, 8 of these teams will be qualified for the group stage, 4 from the upper bracket and without a single loss, and 4 from the lower bracket that will still hold themselves.
Group Stage
The group stage format is a double elimination group stage, in where the 8 already qualified teams will join the 8 teams qualified from the play in stage, and those 16 teams will be divided in these 2 groups, both with 8 teams each. All matches will be BO3, and 2 losses will be elimination, but keep in mind that both teams that get into the grand final from the upper bracket from each group will be qualified, but the winners of the group will advance directly into the semifinals, while the runners up will go into quarterfinals high seeds. There is also a grand final in the lower bracket, and the winners from the lower bracket final will go into the quarterfinals low seeds, and the 2nd placed from group A will play against the 3rd placed from group B, and the 3rd placed from group A will play against the 2nd laced from group B. All other 5 teams from each group will be eliminated
Playoffs
The playoffs will e on LANXESS Arena, with the crowd from Cologne, and this is where all matters, it´s a single elimination bracket, no second chances, and all 4 teams will play, 2 from each group, that stayed on the lowest places, the first match will be the quarterfinals, and it´s going to be between all teams qualified except for the group stage winners, and the winner from the match between 2nd placed from group A and 3rd place from group B will play against the group stage winner from group B, and the winner from the match between 2nd placed from group B and 3rd placed from group A will play against the group stage winner from group A in the semifinals. The winners from the semifinals will face each other in the biggest match of them all, a thrilling 5 map Grand Finals, to decide the winner from IEM Cologne 2023, and to see which team will win 400.000 dollars, and guarantee his spot on IEM Katowice 2024, and be crowned as the king of Cologne, the cathedral of counterstrike. Remembering that last year´s winner was Faze Clan, on a super finale against Navi, in one of the best BO5 matches we have ever seen.
