Intel Extreme Masters Spring 2023 is the Spring tournament from IEM and the last big tournament before the Blast Paris Major, it´s a tournament with a prize pool of 250.000 dollars and will be held on LAN on Brazil in April, and features 16 of the best teams in the world, but to reach there, these teams have to go through several qualifiers, let´s break them out.
European Qualifier
Probably the qualifier with the biggest amount of teams, since to reach the closed qualifier, there are 2 open qualifiers, one with 324 teams and the other with 385 teams, and only the top 2 teams from each open qualifier will be able to reach the closed qualifier. There is a single elimination bracket, you lose you are out, and only the qualification matches are BO3. In this case, Honoris, 9INE, Monte and HEET were the 4 teams qualified from the open qualifier. The closed qualifier features 4 teams from the open qualifier, plus 4 invited teams, that will face each other in a double elimination bracket, each invited team will face a qualified team in the first round, and since there is a lower bracket, 2 losses will get you out. All matches are BO3, and the upper bracket and lower bracket finalists will be qualified, only 2 teams will go through, in this year, 9INE and BIG were those teams.
North America Qualifier
Not with as many teams as the European qualifier, but there are also 2 open qualifiers to reach the closed one, one with 40 teams and the other with 44 teams, all matches are BO1 on a single elimination bracket, with the exception of the Grand Final, that will be a BO3, and only the best team from each open qualifier will go through the closed qualifier. On the closed qualifier, only 4 teams are at this stage, 2 teams from the open qualifier, and 2 invited teams, Complexity and Pain Gaming. It is also a double elimination bracket, which mean 2 losses will get you eliminated, and all matches are BO3, but here only the winner will advance into the IEM Spring 2023.
South American Qualifier
There is even more teams on the open qualifier from South America, 2 open qualifiers as well, one with 128 teams and the other with 148, once again a single elimination bracket, with all matches being BO1, but again, only the grand final are BO3, because only 1 team from each open qualifier will go through the closed qualifier. In this case, O Plano and Fluxo were the 2 qualified teams, and alongside the 2 invited teams, 00 Nation and 9z, they are the 4 teams from the closed qualifier. Like on the North America Closed Qualifier, here is also a double elimination bracket, with all matches being BO3, and only the big winner will advance into the next stage on Brazil.
Asian Qualifier
Last but definitely not least, we have the asian qualifier, which is not very different from the last 2 qualifiers we had, there are also 2 open qualifiers, one with 22 teams and other with 40 teams, in a single elimination bracket with all matches being BO1 and only the Grand Final match is BO3, because only one team from each open qualifier will go through the closed qualifier, and this year, Eruption and Team Renewal were the teams. Alongside with the invited teams, Lynn Vision and IHC Esports, these 4 teams faced each other on a double elimination bracket, all matches being BO3, where only the winner will advance through the main stage of IEM Spring, in this case it was IHC.
IEM Spring 2023 Overview
Now things started to get interesting, from the 16 teams, as we have just seen, 5 came from the qualifiers, 6 are ESL Partner Teams, Furia came as invited team, and the last 4 came from ESL World Ranking. The format of the tournament will work like this: 2 groups each with 8 teams, all opening matches are BO1, all the following matches are BO3, the groups have a double elimination bracket, which mean 2 losses will get you out of the competition, but on the upper bracket, the 2 teams from the final stage will advance into the playoffs, plus the winner from the lower bracket, so in the total, 3 teams from each group, 6 at total will advance into playoffs. The group stage winners will advance directly into the Semifinals, the runners-up, the ones that lost the upper bracket finals against the winners will advance into the quarterfinals on high seeds, and the third placed teams, the winners from the lower bracket will advance into the quarterfinals on the low seeds. Which means that the runner up from Group A will play against the third placed from Group B and the runner up from Group B will face the third placed and lower bracket winner from Group A.
On the playoffs, all matches are BO3, and we are on a single elimination bracket, you lose you are out, no second chances, and we will firstly have the quarterfinals, and the winners from the quarterfinals will face the group stage winners on the semifinals, and those winners will go into eh Grande Final to figure out the winner form Intel Extreme Masters Spring 2023 in Brazil, and the winner will take home 100.000 dollars, and will secure a spot on IEM Cologne 2023 later on July. Last IEM winners were G2 Esports, and last year winners on IEM Spring were Cloud9 on Dallas.
