Manchester United youngster Harry Amass could be on the move again in January, with reports suggesting a potential early exit from Sheffield Wednesday as Championship interest continues to grow.
The 18-year-old left-back joined the Owls on loan at the start of September, tasked with gaining valuable senior experience in one of English football’s most demanding divisions. Despite Sheffield Wednesday’s struggles, Amass has quietly enhanced his reputation with consistent performances.
Championship Interest Growing Despite Sheffield Wednesday Struggles
Amass has featured 16 times in all competitions this season, registering one goal and one assist from defence. Those numbers only tell part of the story, however, with the teenager showing maturity beyond his years in a side battling adversity.
Sheffield Wednesday currently sit bottom of the Championship table, marooned in 24th place and on minus nine points following a points deduction for filing for administration. Playing week in, week out for a struggling side has tested Amass defensively, but it has also accelerated his development.
According to the Daily Mail, as many as 12 Championship clubs are monitoring his situation closely. Fourth-placed Millwall and seventh-placed Stoke City are reportedly among the most interested, with both clubs considering a loan approach for the second half of the 2025–26 campaign.
Crucially, Amass’ loan deal with Sheffield Wednesday includes a break clause, giving Manchester United flexibility should a better developmental opportunity arise.
Ruben Amorim’s Comment Explained
The debate around Amass intensified following comments from Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, who told reporters:
“Amass is now struggling in the Championship.”
Those words quickly sparked controversy among fans and pundits alike. However, it is understood Amorim was referring to the context of Sheffield Wednesday’s difficult campaign, rather than suggesting the teenager himself is failing to cope with the division.
In fact, internally Amass remains highly rated at Old Trafford and is still viewed as a long-term first-team option.
Manchester United’s Long-Term Plan for Amass
Amass joined United from Watford in 2023 and has already amassed seven senior appearances for the club, including five outings in the Premier League during the 2024–25 season. That early exposure underlined how highly the club rates his potential.
The decision to send him out on loan this season was driven by development rather than doubt. United wanted Amass playing regular football, learning the physical and tactical demands of senior football — something the Championship provides in abundance.
