Veron Suspended for Six Months Over Guard of Honour Protest

28.11.2025, 03:44

Veron’s Six-Month Ban

Juan Sebastian Veron, president of Estudiantes, has been suspended for six months by the Argentina Football Association. The ban follows his refusal to form a guard of honour for newly crowned champions Rosario Central.

Veron and his team protested Rosario’s title, awarded due to a rule change by the Argentina FA. The change allows the team with the highest combined points from the Apertura and Clausura tournaments to be named champion. Angel di Maria‘s Rosario finished with 66 points, four more than Boca Juniors.

League Structure and Protest

The Argentine top division splits into two halves: the Apertura, ending in June, and the Clausura, concluding next month. Each tournament features a 16-game league phase followed by a knockout stage. Platense won the Apertura.

Before their Clausura last-16 knockout match against Rosario, Estudiantes protested. Veron’s side won the match 1-0. The Argentina FA responded with a six-month suspension for Veron and two-match bans for players involved in the protest, effective next season.

Upcoming Matches

Estudiantes will face Central Cordoba in their Clausura quarter-final on Saturday. The Apertura champions, Platense, will meet the Clausura champions in the end-of-year Champions Trophy.
