Tottenham Hotspur are actively scouting for defensive reinforcements as speculation swirls around Cristian Romero’s potential departure. According to reports, Spurs are in a tug-of-war with Inter Milan over Genoa defender Koni de Winter, who has emerged as a top target for the North London club.
Romero’s Future Under Scrutiny
With Thomas Frank now at the helm, Tottenham have been relatively quiet in the transfer market. However, the looming uncertainty over Romero’s future is sparking transfer action. Claims from South America earlier this week suggested Atletico Madrid had reached a verbal agreement for the World Cup winner. Although those reports were quickly dismissed, Diego Simeone’s genuine interest in his compatriot has not waned.
Should Atletico formalise their pursuit, Tottenham would be under immediate pressure to secure a reliable replacement at the heart of their defence.
Koni de Winter: A Rising Defensive Prospect
Enter Koni de Winter. The 23-year-old Belgian impressed across two seasons at Genoa, racking up 57 appearances and three goals in all competitions. Originally on loan from Juventus, Genoa secured his services permanently in 2024 for €8m (£6.9m). They’re now reportedly looking to cash in for a significant profit, setting a price tag of £21.5m.
De Winter’s versatility—comfortable as a centre-back, right-back, or holding midfielder—adds to his appeal. With Inter Milan also circling, Spurs must act decisively to secure his signature.
Transfer Strategy Taking Shape
Spurs have already been proactive this window, sealing a permanent deal for Lens centre-back Kevin Danso and reportedly agreeing terms with Kawasaki Frontale’s Kota Takai. The latter, despite his youth, is expected to integrate immediately into the first team, alongside teenage prospect Luka Vuskovic, who will feature in pre-season.
Other Defensive Targets in the Mix
Should Tottenham fail to land De Winter, other names remain on their radar. One notable option is Castello Lukeba of RB Leipzig. However, his €90m (£77.7m) release clause makes him a far costlier venture. While Leipzig might entertain lower offers, the gap between his fee and De Winter’s asking price is substantial.

Domestic targets like Jarrad Branthwaite appear out of reach following his Everton renewal, and Liverpool’s strong links with Marc Guehi could steer Tottenham’s hunt abroad for a Romero replacement.
The Clock Is Ticking
With European clubs already on the move, Tottenham must move quickly and strategically. Whether Romero stays or not, Frank needs depth and reliability at the back. Koni de Winter might just be the shrewd investment Spurs are looking for—if they can beat Inter Milan to the punch.
