Malta hosts the next big Counter-Strike 2 LAN of the year, and it arrives fast. The Thunderpick World Championship 2026 runs from October 14 to October 18 at BLAST Arena Studios in Attard, with eight invited teams splitting a $1,000,000 prize pool. GAM3RS_X organises the event, which carries S-Tier status on Liquipedia and Valve Tier 1 classification.
Every invitation was handed out on the basis of the Valve Regional Standings as of the August update, so there were no qualifiers and no open path into the field. That cuts both ways. A few of the planet’s very best rosters are absent, largely because ESL Pro League Season 24 wrapped up just three days before the opening bell in Attard. What remains is still a serious eight-team bracket with world-class firepower in it.

The format, explained in plain terms
Five days, two stages, no filler. The group stage splits the eight teams into two quartets of four, each running the GSL double-elimination structure that CS fans know well: opening matches, then a winners’ match and an elimination match, then a decider. Everything in groups is best-of-three, which is a mercy. No coinflip best-of-ones deciding a $1,000,000 bracket.
The top two from each group move into the playoffs. From there it is straight single elimination, with best-of-three semifinals and a best-of-three third-place decider. The grand final on Sunday, October 18 is a best-of-five. Four teams go home after the groups, and with eight teams only, a single bad day on the wrong map can end a campaign before Friday.
Who is playing
Falcons, FURIA, Legacy and Aurora headline the field. They are joined by BETBOOM, 9z, PARIVISION and Ninjas in Pyjamas.
Ninjas in Pyjamas are late additions. They replace Virtus.pro, who withdrew after visa problems hit Aleksandr “AquaRS” Kovalev and health issues forced Dias “F0R3VER” Kutubay to temporarily step away from the lineup. Two separate problems, one withdrawal, and an unexpected slot for NiP.
There is better news on the Brazilian side of the bracket. Legacy get Andrei “arT” Piovezan back behind the controls. The in-game leader sat out ESL Pro League Season 24 while recovering from meningitis, and Legacy played Poland with Pedro “bobz” Rocha standing in, crashing out in the group stage. Getting your caller back for a $1,000,000 LAN is worth more than any map-pool tweak, and we think Legacy are the most unpredictable side in Attard because of it.
Opening day schedule
All eight teams are in action on Wednesday, October 14. Group A starts things off with 9z vs Aurora, followed by Falcons vs Ninjas in Pyjamas. Group B then delivers Legacy vs PARIVISION and FURIA vs BETBOOM.
| Group | Opening matches (Oct 14) | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Group A | 9z vs Aurora; Falcons vs Ninjas in Pyjamas | Bo3, GSL double elimination |
| Group B | Legacy vs PARIVISION; FURIA vs BETBOOM | Bo3, GSL double elimination |
The Falcons vs Ninjas in Pyjamas opener is the one most neutrals will circle. NiP arrive on short notice against arguably the strongest roster in the building, and a replacement team running into the group favourite in match one is a rough welcome to Malta.
How we read the bracket
Group A looks top-heavy. Falcons should be favoured to take the winners’ match, leaving Aurora, 9z and NiP to fight over the second slot, and Aurora have the cleaner recent body of work of that trio. Group B is messier. FURIA and BETBOOM meet immediately, PARIVISION have the individual talent to beat anyone on a hot day, and Legacy with arT back are a genuine wildcard rather than a tidy fourth seed.
Best-of-three groups reward depth of map pool more than peak aim, which is exactly why a short five-day event can still produce a surprising final four. Teams fresh off ESL Pro League Season 24 arrive with form but very little rest. Teams that skipped Poland arrive rested but cold. That tension decides more Malta series than anybody’s rating.
Betting angles worth thinking about
Eight teams and a short runtime means a tight outright market and plenty of series-level value for anyone who follows map vetoes closely. Group winner markets are often the softest line in GSL formats, because the path to a 2-0 group record is only two matches deep. Live markets also matter here: with every group game a Bo3, comeback prices after a lost first map show up constantly.
- Outrights: Falcons headline the field, but a Bo5 grand final flattens variance and favours the deeper rosters.
- Group B qualification doubles look more attractive than straight winner bets given how even the quartet is.
- Watch roster news right up to tip-off. The Virtus.pro withdrawal shows how quickly an eight-team field can change shape.

What to watch for
Honestly, the most interesting storyline is arT’s return. Legacy were a shell without him in Poland, and a meningitis recovery is not a small thing to come back from. If he plays at anything close to his old level, Group B gets chaotic in a hurry. Beyond that, keep an eye on how Ninjas in Pyjamas handle a tournament they were not planning to attend, and whether FURIA can convert their Pro League mileage into a deep Malta run rather than burnout.
Groups start Wednesday, October 14. The grand final is Sunday, October 18, best-of-five, with $1,000,000 split across the eight-team field.
