‘They Get Away With a Lot’ – Jaylen Brown Hits Out at NBA Referees

11.01.2026, 07:51

Jaylen Brown did not hold back after the Boston Celtics’ 100–95 defeat to the San Antonio Spurs, launching a blistering critique of NBA officiating and accusing referees of repeated inconsistency.

The Celtics were limited to just four free throws across the entire game on Saturday night, a statistic that immediately raised eyebrows. For Brown, it was the clearest indicator of what he believes is an ongoing problem when Boston faces elite opposition.

“I feel like, honestly, they just got away with a lot, and I’m tired of the inconsistency,” Brown said after finishing with 27 points. “I’ll accept the fine at this point. I thought it was some bulls***.”

Brown went a step further by directly naming officiating crew chief Curtis Blair, making it clear he was prepared for disciplinary action.

“I think [the Spurs are] a good defensive team, but they ain’t that damn good,” he continued. “Every time we play a good team, it’s the same s***. They refuse to make a call, then call touch fouls on the other end.”

The Celtics star expressed particular frustration at what he perceives as a one-sided whistle, claiming Boston’s physical approach was not rewarded in the same way as their opponents’.

“We play hard. We compete. Then they reward the other team with touch fouls,” Brown said. “I’m driving to the basket. I’m physical. I don’t flop. I go up strong. Zero free throws tonight. The inconsistency is crazy.”

Boston ultimately lost the game by just five points — a margin that Brown could not ignore given the free-throw disparity.

“We shot four free throws and lost by four,” he added. “That’s not the whole story. We’ve got to be better in spots, and I’ve got to be better in spots. But damn.”

While Brown’s focus was firmly on the officiating, Victor Wembanyama offered a calmer assessment from the Spurs’ perspective. The rookie phenom contributed 21 points and emphasized San Antonio’s improved ability to close games.

“The mindset was just that we had to close it out,” Wembanyama said. “Too often we put in the effort and let it go to waste. This time, we didn’t let that happen.”

The result leaves Boston reflecting not only on execution but also on how physical games are officiated — a debate that Brown has now forcefully dragged back into the NBA spotlight.
