Real Madrid have been dealt a significant setback ahead of the Spanish Super Cup, with worrying news emerging around Kylian Mbappé’s fitness just days before the tournament kicks off in Saudi Arabia.
On December 31, the club officially confirmed that the French superstar had picked up an injury. In a brief medical update, Los Blancos revealed that Mbappé was diagnosed with a sprain to his left knee following tests conducted by the club’s medical staff.
“Following the tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappé by Real Madrid’s medical staff, a sprain of the left knee has been diagnosed. Awaiting further developments,” read the club’s statement.
Mbappé Pushing to Travel, But Semifinal Looks Unlikely
Despite the diagnosis, Mbappé has made it clear that he wants to travel with the rest of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad to Saudi Arabia for the Super Cup. Real Madrid were initially hopeful that the forward could recover in time to feature in Thursday’s high-stakes semi-final against Atlético Madrid.
However, those hopes have now taken a serious hit.
According to AS, Mbappé — who has been restricted to gym-based work in recent days — will not be fit in time for the Madrid derby. The French captain is yet to resume full training, and the medical staff are unwilling to take unnecessary risks with such a key player.
Doubts Also Remain Over a Potential Final
The concerns don’t stop there. Cadena COPE reports that Mbappé’s availability for a potential final is also far from guaranteed. While Real Madrid are keeping the door open, his participation would depend on how his knee responds in the coming days.
For Ancelotti, the absence of Mbappé would be a major tactical blow in a competition where fine margins often decide silverware. With Atlético Madrid standing in their way, Madrid may need to rely on their squad depth and experience rather than their marquee signing.
Whether Mbappé can recover in time to play any role in the Spanish Super Cup remains one of the key storylines to watch as the tournament approaches.
