Southampton CEO Slams Playoff Final Expulsion as 'Manifestly Disproportionate'

20.05.2026, 11:13

Southampton CEO Phil Parsons has publicly challenged the club’s expulsion from the Championship playoff final, describing the punishment as “a sanction which bears no proportion to the offence” in a statement released on Wednesday.

Southampton were removed from Saturday’s Championship playoff final — described as the richest game in world football — after the Independent Disciplinary Commission found them guilty of spying on semi-final opponents Middlesbrough in training. A four-point deduction for next season was also handed down, representing one of the stiffest penalties ever imposed in the English game. Middlesbrough have since been reinstated and are scheduled to face Hull City at Wembley on Saturday. Southampton have lodged an appeal, with a final ruling expected later the same day.

Parsons Draws Sharp Contrast With Leeds United Fine

Parsons acknowledged the club’s wrongdoing but drew a direct comparison to the punishment handed to Leeds United in 2019, when the club was fined £200,000 and reprimanded after then-manager Marcelo Bielsa admitted his staff had watched all opponents in training that season — including Derby County.

“Whereas Leeds United was fined 200,000 pounds ($267,940) for a similar offence, Southampton has been denied the opportunity to compete in a game worth more than 200 million pounds and one which means so much to our staff, players and supporters.”

Parsons stated the club believes “the financial consequence of yesterday’s ruling makes it, by a very considerable distance, the largest penalty ever imposed on an English football club.” That assessment is grounded in the economics of promotion. Even a single Premier League season followed by immediate relegation is estimated to be worth around £200 million across three seasons when accounting for broadcast revenue, sponsorship and parachute payments.

Historical Benchmarks Cited in Appeal

Parsons also referenced Luton Town‘s 30-point deduction in 2008-09 while in League Two, and Derby County‘s 21-point deduction in 2021 that stripped them of their Championship status — noting that neither case carried comparable financial stakes.

“We say this not to minimise what occurred at this club, which we have accepted was wrong. We say it because proportionality is itself a principle of natural justice. The Commission was entitled to impose a sanction. It was not, we will argue, entitled to impose one that is manifestly disproportionate to every previous sanction in the history of the English game.”

The appeal outcome will determine whether Southampton are reinstated for Saturday’s final or whether Middlesbrough proceed against Hull City. Follow TipsGG for live updates as the ruling comes through.
