Pacemaker Saves Christian Eriksen's Life in Denmark vs Ukraine Friendly

08.06.2026, 10:32

Christian Eriksen‘s Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) almost certainly saved his life when he collapsed during the friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine, according to cardiologist Henning Molgaard, speaking to BT.dk. The device was fitted to Eriksen following his cardiac arrest at EURO 2021 during the match against Finland.

With 65 minutes played in the international friendly, the Wolfsburg midfielder collapsed on the pitch in scenes that immediately recalled his EURO 2021 episode. Spectators and television viewers endured 20 minutes of uncertainty before Eriksen got back to his feet, escorted off the pitch by players from both national sides, and was taken by ambulance to Odense University Hospital.

For Molgaard, the outcome leaves little room for ambiguity.

“His pacemaker did the job to save his life.”

The cardiologist also noted that patients fitted with a pacemaker carry an ongoing risk, and that a repeat event is a recognized possibility rather than an anomaly.

“It can definitely happen again. We see this in many completely ordinary people who have a small, discreet heart disease, who go into cardiac arrest again, and then the pacemaker comes into effect. So, regardless of what is behind Christian Eriksen‘s case, it can happen again.”

The match was called off following the incident. Eriksen remained under observation at Odense University Hospital but was expected to be discharged the same day to begin his holiday. Follow TipsGG for continued coverage of this developing story and all major football news.
