Monterrey 1-1 Inter Milan: Chivu’s Debut Ends in a Stalemate
Inter Milan were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Monterrey in their FIFA Club World Cup opener, as Sergio Ramos’ early header earned the Mexican side a valuable point at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
The Nerazzurri began aggressively, eager to put a forgettable 2024/25 season behind them. But despite controlling possession early, they lacked urgency and precision — and were punished when Sergio Canales surged through midfield to win a corner, which Sergio Ramos buried with a thumping header in the 25th minute.
Inter nearly hit back three minutes later when Esteban Andrada pulled off a world-class save to deny Sebastiano Esposito after a pinpoint Carlos Augusto cross. Their equaliser finally came on the stroke of halftime via a clever free-kick routine finished by Lautaro Martinez.
Inter dominated chances in the second half. Martinez had two golden opportunities — an offside finish in the 68th minute and a wild miss ten minutes later — but Monterrey held firm. Coach Cristian Chivu, overseeing his first competitive game, will find positives in the performance despite the missed chances.
Betting Insight:
With Inter’s inefficiency in front of goal and Monterrey’s record of scoring in 12 of their 13 Club World Cup appearances, both teams to score (BTTS) markets and unders remain intriguing options moving forward.

Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 Ulsan HD: South African Side Make History
In Orlando, Mamelodi Sundowns made history with their first-ever FIFA Club World Cup win, defeating Ulsan HD 1-0 and taking top spot in Group F after Dortmund and Fluminense played out a 0-0 draw earlier in the day.
The South African champions thought they had struck first on 29 minutes when Iqraam Rayners bundled home from a corner, but VAR ruled it out for handball. Rayners responded swiftly, scoring a clinical finish with the outside of his right foot after latching onto Lucas Ribeiro’s through ball just seven minutes later.
Ulsan nearly levelled before halftime, but Divine Lunga cleared Seong-Beom Ko’s looping effort off the line. The second half saw few clear chances, although Ribeiro nearly curled in a beauty — only to be denied by a heroic Ulsan block.
Despite late pressure, Sundowns closed out the match professionally, sealing a massive result and leapfrogging to the top of the group standings. Ulsan now face an uphill battle, rooted to the bottom of the group with one game left.
Betting Insight:
The Sundowns’ disciplined defensive display makes clean sheet and under 2.5 goal markets appealing in future matches, while Ulsan’s dismal record against foreign teams (eight losses in their last nine) signals caution for punters backing a turnaround.
