Marcelino Exits Villarreal Despite European Success
Marcelino will leave Villarreal at the end of the season, the LaLiga club announced on Monday. The 60-year-old departs after guiding the team to a second consecutive Champions League qualification, marking the first time in club history they’ve achieved this feat.
The manager’s tenure spans two separate periods. Between 2013 and 2016, he established his foundation at the club. He returned in 2023 and has now overseen 298 games across all competitions, more than any other Villarreal coach in history.
Contract Negotiations Breakdown
Disagreement over contract length triggered the split. Villarreal offered only a one-year extension, while Marcelino sought to construct a long-term project. With Villarreal currently sitting third in LaLiga with four matches remaining, the club secured automatic Champions League entry regardless of the managerial situation.
A Decorated Coaching Record
Marcelino arrives on the transfer market with substantial credentials. He won the Copa del Rey with Valencia in 2019 and claimed the Spanish Super Cup with Athletic Bilbao in 2021. He has attracted interest from English Premier League clubs.
His departure ends a successful cycle at Villarreal but leaves the club searching for new direction heading into their return to European football’s elite stage.
