Malaysian Police Smash Online Gambling Syndicate in Kuching Raids

24.12.2025, 05:04

28 Arrested in Kuching as Police Dismantle Illegal Gambling Call Centre

Kuching law enforcement struck a major blow against illegal online gambling on December 22, raiding two residential units along Jalan Song and detaining 28 suspects. The operation targeted a suspected syndicate running an unlicensed call centre facilitating bets for international clients.

ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, Kuching District Police Chief, confirmed the raids were executed by the Criminal Investigation Division alongside D7 Branch personnel from the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters. Intelligence gathered through Operation Dadu Mega—a statewide crackdown on unlawful gambling—triggered the enforcement action.

Seized Equipment and Suspect Profiles

Among those arrested: three Malaysian men and 25 foreign nationals, including one woman. Ages ranged from 19 to 40. Police confiscated multiple computers, mobile phones, and other devices believed to have processed wagers for customers in Australia and China.

Investigators revealed the syndicate had operated for approximately four months, leveraging WhatsApp and dedicated websites to promote its services. All suspects now face a three-day remand order issued by the Kuching Magistrate’s Court to facilitate further questioning.

Legal Ramifications and Ongoing Investigations

The case proceeds under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries penalties of fines and imprisonment upon conviction. Authorities are also probing potential violations of the Immigration Act, including overstaying and residing in Malaysia without valid documentation.

“This operation underscores our commitment to dismantling illegal gambling networks that exploit digital platforms,” said ACP Chabu. “We urge the public to report any suspicious activities to our Kuching IPD Control Centre.”

The crackdown aligns with broader regional enforcement trends. In Macau, police recently intercepted 606 individuals during a winter operation and arrested 13 suspects linked to an extortion ring targeting casino scam operators.
