Luca Zidane’s Jaw Fracture Jeopardizes Algeria’s World Cup Campaign
Luca Zidane, Algeria‘s first-choice goalkeeper, faces World Cup participation uncertainty after sustaining a jaw and chin fracture during Granada‘s 4-2 home defeat against Almeria in Spain’s second tier on Sunday.
The 27-year-old son of former France international Zinedine Zidane was removed from play after colliding with an opponent, suffering a concussion alongside the jaw injury.
Granada confirmed the player will miss the remainder of the season. Extended recovery or surgery could prolong his absence even further.
“The player, in consultation with the club’s medical staff, will decide in the coming hours on the course of treatment to be followed,” the club stated late Monday.
Goalkeeper Depth Crisis for Algeria
The injury creates a significant problem for Algeria‘s goalkeeper position. Back-up options Anthony Mandrea and Melvin Mastil are both currently sidelined with injuries, leaving the national team without experienced goalkeeper depth.
Algeria begins World Cup competition on June 16 against defending champions Argentina. The timing of Zidane‘s injury leaves minimal recovery window for the North African side to address their goalkeeper crisis before the tournament.
