Klopp's Personal Call Convinces Ebnoutalib to Choose Germany Over Morocco

Jurgen Klopp has already made his mark on the German national team, and Younes Ebnoutalib is the latest proof. The Eintracht Frankfurt forward has confirmed that a direct phone call from the new Germany boss settled his international future, pulling him away from Morocco despite genuine interest from the Atlas Lions.

The Klopp factor in Ebnoutalib’s decision

International eligibility battles often come down to one factor: who is asking. Ebnoutalib has become the newest case study, confirming he has committed his future to Germany after Klopp reached out personally. The Eintracht Frankfurt striker, eligible for Morocco through family heritage, admitted talks had taken place with the Moroccan federation. The chance to work under Klopp proved too strong to pass up.

“There were talks with Morocco. But when Jurgen Klopp calls, you can’t say no,” Ebnoutalib said.

A rapid rise from the lower leagues

Ebnoutalib’s path to the senior national team reads like fiction. Two years ago he was grinding through the Regionalliga with FC Giessen. His explosive form this season, four goals already for Frankfurt, caught Klopp’s attention during a visit to the club’s training ground.

The striker described the moment he got the call while on a sports field during a day off. He assumed Klopp simply wanted to check in on him. That assumption didn’t last long.

“After the phone call, tears came to my eyes. I thought about where I was just a few years ago and that it’s crazy that all the hard work has paid off,” he noted.

Ebnoutalib painted a picture of a national team camp charged by Klopp’s presence, where reputation alone commands respect from the group. Germany are gearing up for a stretch of Nations League fixtures, including a marquee test against the Netherlands, where Ebnoutalib hopes to earn his first senior cap and cement his commitment to the DFB.

“The impression is very positive. He is, of course, someone who brings a great deal of experience and already has a certain presence because of what he has achieved over the years. So, naturally, you have a great deal of respect for him. But he was very nice and very likeable in the conversations,” the striker noted.

“He is already very well known for the way he wants to play football. With high pressing, with a lot of energy and power. He has already fired us up. I think that’s what he is known for, that he is very good at reaching people and getting them on board. He has certainly got us in the right mindset.”

Torn between two homelands

His place in Klopp’s expansive 44-man experimental squad for the upcoming Nations League matches marks a real turning point in his young career. The groundwork for this switch was reportedly laid earlier this month when Klopp visited Frankfurt’s training base in person. Ebnoutalib confirmed he had spoken with Mohamed Ouahbi, Morocco’s national team coach, but stressed the pull toward Germany felt far more immediate once Klopp made contact himself.

“I spoke with him, but it wasn’t an intensive exchange. I love both countries; they are both my countries of origin. I will definitely continue to support Morocco,” Ebnoutalib concluded.
