The Golden Shoe: A Mid-Season Showdown
The chase for the European Golden Shoe is intensifying as the 2025-26 season nears its midpoint. The prestigious award, celebrating the continent’s top league scorer, has seen a new winner each year for the past three seasons. This time around, the competition is fiercer than ever.
Harry Kane of Bayern Munich leads the pack with 19 goals in 15 Bundesliga matches, tying on points with Erling Haaland of Manchester City, who has also netted 19 times in 17 Premier League games. Close behind is Kylian Mbappé, the reigning champion, with 18 goals in 18 La Liga appearances. The trio—all former winners—are separated by just one goal.
Further down the list, Darko Lemajic of Latvian side RFS sits fourth with 28 goals, while Ayase Ueda of Feyenoord rounds out the top five with 18 goals in the Eredivisie.
How the Golden Shoe Works
The award, first introduced in 1967-68, now operates on a weighted points system. Goals in Europe’s top five leagues— Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1—earn two points each. Leagues ranked sixth to 22nd by UEFA, like the Portuguese Primeira Liga, award 1.5 points per goal, while lower-ranked leagues give one point.
Tiebreakers have evolved over time. Since 2019-20, if players finish level on points, the award goes to the one with fewer minutes played. Assists and penalty goals serve as further deciders before a potential share.
Award’s Legendary History
The Golden Shoe has been claimed by football’s greatest. Eusebio won the first edition in 1968 with 42 goals for Benfica, later securing it again in 1972-73. Lionel Messi holds the record with six wins, including a historic 50-goal season in 2011-12. Cristiano Ronaldo claimed it four times, while Ian Rush became the first English-based winner in 1983-84.
Recent years have seen Haaland (2022-23), Kane (2023-24), and Mbappé (2024-25) each take the crown. Now, the same trio is locked in another thrilling battle.
