Thomas Frank has played down growing speculation surrounding Brennan Johnson’s future, insisting he expects the Tottenham forward to feature in Spurs’ New Year’s Day trip to Brentford despite reported interest from Crystal Palace.
Several major British outlets, including the BBC and Sky Sports, have claimed that Palace have seen a £35 million bid accepted for the 24-year-old Wales international. However, Johnson is understood to be yet to give the move his approval, leaving the situation unresolved as the January transfer window approaches.
Bournemouth are also monitoring developments closely, with the Cherries preparing for the potential departure of Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City in the opening days of the window. Johnson’s availability has therefore become one of the more intriguing subplots heading into the festive fixture list.
Frank: “I Fully Expect Him to Be Available”
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Frank was clear in his stance, emphasising Johnson’s professionalism amid the external noise.
“Brennan has been a top professional,” Frank said. “He trained very well. I fully expect him to be available and able to play against Brentford.”
It’s a strong message from the Spurs boss, particularly with speculation intensifying over Johnson’s role in the squad following a change in the dugout over the summer.

From Key Man to Squad Rotation
Johnson arrived in north London from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2023 for £47.5 million and quickly justified the investment. He finished last season as Tottenham’s leading scorer with 18 goals, including the decisive strike in the Europa League final against Manchester United — a moment that ended the club’s 17-year wait for major silverware.
However, his role has shifted significantly this campaign. Since Frank replaced Ange Postecoglou, Johnson has largely found himself operating as a rotation option behind Mohammed Kudus on the right flank.
The numbers reflect that change in status. Johnson has scored four goals in 22 appearances across all competitions this season, a return that contrasts sharply with his output during Spurs’ trophy-winning run.

Palace Push for Firepower
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has made little secret of his desire to add attacking reinforcements, with his side struggling to maintain early-season momentum.
After a promising start to the campaign, Palace are now winless in their last five matches, with a congested schedule across three competitions beginning to expose a lack of depth in forward areas.
“I think, to be honest, if you watch our game, it is pretty clear what we need,” Glasner admitted. “Then it is a decision of Crystal Palace.”
“If you are constantly under-performing in scoring goals, yeah. Look, all I can do is encourage the players, support them and be positive.”
Decision Looms Ahead of January Window
With interest mounting and minutes at a premium in north London, Johnson’s future remains one to watch closely as January approaches. For now, Frank appears content to rely on the forward’s focus and professionalism, but the coming days could prove decisive.
Whether Johnson features on New Year’s Day or edges closer to a move away, his situation underlines how quickly fortunes can shift at the top end of the Premier League.
