Former Arsenal Academy Star Billy Vigar Passes Away After Tragic Injury

26.09.2025, 03:05

Football has been left in mourning following the devastating news that Billy Vigar, former Arsenal academy striker and Chichester City forward, has passed away at just 21 years of age. Vigar tragically lost his life after suffering a significant brain injury during a match against Wingate & Finchley on Saturday.

The Incident

The Isthmian Premier Division clash was abandoned after Vigar collided with a concrete wall just 15 minutes into the game. Medical staff rushed to his aid, with both an ambulance and air ambulance called to the ground. He was placed into an induced coma and underwent surgery in hospital, but the injuries ultimately proved fatal.

Family Statement

In a heartbreaking message released through Chichester City, Vigar’s family confirmed:
“After sustaining a significant brain injury last Saturday, Billy was put in an induced coma. On Tuesday he needed an operation to aid any chances of recovery. Although this helped, the injury proved too much for him and he passed away on Thursday morning.”

They added: “The responses to the original update show how much Billy was thought of and loved within the sport. His family are devastated that this has happened whilst he was playing the sport that he loved.”

Tributes from Clubs

The football community has rallied to pay tribute. Arsenal, where Vigar spent seven years in their youth system, released a statement:
“Everyone at Arsenal is devastated by the shocking news that former academy graduate Billy Vigar has passed away. All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time.”

Messages of condolence also poured in from Derby County, where he had a loan spell, as well as Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Millwall. The FA joined them, sending “heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and everyone at Chichester City.”

Vigar’s Career Journey

Born in Worthing, West Sussex, Vigar joined Arsenal’s academy in 2017 at the age of 14 and signed his first professional contract with the Gunners in July 2022. He featured for the U18s and U21s, including appearances in the Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.

Loan moves followed, with spells at Derby County U21 and Eastbourne Borough. After leaving Arsenal in 2024, he signed with Hastings United before making the move to Chichester City earlier this summer.

A Life and Career Cut Short

Vigar was widely admired for his determination, professionalism, and love for the game. His untimely passing has left a deep void not only in Chichester but also among those who worked with him during his time at Arsenal and beyond.

As the football world reflects on the loss of such a young talent, one message has echoed across all tributes: Billy Vigar will be remembered not just as a player, but as a loved teammate, friend, and son who embodied the spirit of the sport he cherished.

Rest in peace, Billy.
