Portugal have been dealt a setback just days before the start of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed on Thursday morning that Diogo Dalot reported muscle discomfort and has been released from international duty.
The Manchester United full-back will now miss the upcoming fixtures against Armenia and Hungary. In his place, Nuno Tavares of Lazio has received a late call-up and will link up with the squad directly in Yerevan, travelling from Rome.
Portugal open Group F action on Saturday at 18:00 CET when they face Armenia. They will then travel to Budapest for a key clash against Hungary, scheduled for Tuesday at 20:45 CET.
Dalot’s absence is a blow for head coach Roberto Martínez, who had relied on the United defender for his versatility and consistency in recent international fixtures. Tavares, meanwhile, will be hoping to seize the opportunity and impress on the international stage.
With expectations high and qualifying points at stake, all eyes will be on how Portugal adapt without one of their regular defensive options.
