Claudio Ranieri has officially declined the offer to manage Italy’s national team, opting instead to continue his new role as senior advisor at AS Roma. The decision comes after the dismissal of Luciano Spalletti, who stepped down following Italy’s 3-0 loss to Norway in their 2026 World Cup qualifying opener.
Speaking to Italian news agency ANSA, Ranieri expressed gratitude to FIGC President Gabriele Gravina for considering him for the high-profile post.
“I thank President Gravina for the opportunity, a great honour, but I have reflected and decided to remain available to Roma in my new position totally,” he said.
The 73-year-old recently concluded his second stint in coaching after helping Roma to a fifth-place Serie A finish and Europa League qualification last season. While speculation grew around a possible national team comeback, Ranieri reaffirmed his commitment to Roma’s long-term project.
“The Friedkins gave me their full support and backing for whatever decision I had made regarding the national team,” he added. “But the decision is mine alone.”
Roma have since appointed former Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini as head coach for the upcoming season, signaling a new era at the club with Ranieri providing strategic guidance behind the scenes.
