Akpom Secures Ipswich Transfer Following Championship Success
Chuba Akpom has completed his permanent transfer to Ipswich Town after the club’s promotion to the Premier League. The striker, who spent the 2023-24 season on loan from Ajax, triggered an automatic purchase clause worth £8 million (€9.2 million) when Ipswich Town clinched a second-place finish in the Championship.
Ipswich Town secured promotion by defeating Queens Park Rangers 3-0, finishing ahead of Millwall and Southampton in the title race.
Limited Impact During Loan Spell
The 30-year-old Englishman made a modest contribution during his temporary stint. Across 29 Championship appearances, Akpom registered two goals and no assists. He started just seven matches, with his final goal coming in Ipswich Town’s 3-0 victory over Oxford United on New Year’s Day.
His playing time diminished significantly as the season progressed. In the final 15 games, Akpom appeared in only five matches for a combined 85 minutes, remaining on the bench for the other 10 fixtures.
Brief Ajax Career Precedes Loan Move
Akpom joined Ajax in 2023 from Middlesbrough for €12.3 million but struggled to establish himself in Amsterdam. During his time with the Dutch club, he made 68 appearances across all competitions and scored 23 goals. Internal turmoil at Ajax limited his effectiveness during the 2022-23 period.
The permanent transfer to Ipswich Town now gives the striker the opportunity to rebuild his career at the Premier League level, having secured top-flight football through the club’s successful Championship campaign.
