Chelsea have made an approach to sign John Stones on a free transfer this summer, with the 32-year-old centre-back now available after his contract at Manchester City expired. Arsenal are also tracking the England international, setting up a Premier League battle for his signature.

According to Football Insider, Chelsea have already made an approach for Stones, positioning themselves ahead of several rivals. Arsenal’s interest centres on finding cover following William Saliba’s long-term injury, with Stones seen as an experienced option to fill that gap in the short term.

Stones’ Decade at the Etihad

Stones joined Manchester City from Everton for £47.5 million in August 2016 and spent nearly a decade at the club. His time there was defined by rotation and recurring fitness problems, though he remained part of the squad through multiple title-winning campaigns. Across his City career he made close to 300 appearances, contributing 19 goals and nine assists. His contract expired this summer, making him a free agent and attracting immediate attention from clubs across Europe.

Why Both Clubs Are Interested

Arsenal’s need is clear. With Saliba sidelined, the defensive depth looks thin, and Stones offers the versatility and Premier League experience Mikel Arteta requires without a significant outlay.

Chelsea’s motivation runs deeper. The club is expected to offload Axel Disasi, who does not feature in Xabi Alonso’s plans, while Benoit Badiashile’s future at Stamford Bridge also remains uncertain. That leaves a gap at centre-back that Stones could fill. His performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup indicated he remains capable at the top level despite his injury history.

Competition From Abroad

Stones has drawn interest from Bayern Munich, Everton, and Juventus as well. With Chelsea having already initiated contact, they currently hold an edge in the race. A Bosman deal of this profile rarely stays straightforward for long, and the coming weeks will determine where Stones lands.
