Speaking in an interview with Romario on his YouTube channel, the former Spain international reflected on the period under Mourinho’s management and admitted the situation grew progressively harder to handle over time.
A Marriage That Became a Divorce
Casillas did not hold back when characterising those years, calling them the most demanding of his professional life.
“It was the most difficult period of my career because I was the captain. I had to talk to him constantly, deal with many issues, and, in the end, something that starts as a beautiful marriage, full of love and affection, turns into a complete divorce as time goes by.”
Despite the weight of those experiences, Casillas was clear that no bitterness remains between him and Mourinho today.
“Today, I believe that between José and me, things have moved on. If we have to see each other, we see each other; it’s no problem. But back then, it was tough.”
The Beginning of the End at the Bernabéu
The former goalkeeper acknowledged that those internal tensions may have set the departure process in motion, though he stopped short of reducing it to a single cause.
“It may be that this was the start of my departure. But it’s also true that I went on to win the European Cup. I believe everything has a beginning and an end. When you’re captain and you have to deal with constant problems — not just with the manager, but also with the club — in the end that friction means you start to get a bit fed up, both the club with me and me with the club. But it’s not the club, it’s the people. And I realised that, after everything I’d been through and the whole period I’d spent there — more than 15 years — I needed a change of scenery and a break.”
More than a decade on, the departure of Casillas remains one of the most emotionally charged exits in modern Real Madrid history. As club captain, academy product, and widely regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in the club’s history, many supporters had expected him to finish his career at the Santiago Bernabéu. Shifting internal dynamics ended that chapter instead.
Why Porto Made Sense
Casillas eventually moved to FC Porto, and he explained the reasoning behind that specific choice with straightforward logic.
“We all needed a change of scenery, and in the end I chose Porto because it was in a neighbouring country. It was close to home, and I wanted to experience a slightly different kind of football to what I’d experienced before.”
Proximity, a new footballing environment, and the desire for a clean break drove a decision that closed out an era at one of European football’s most storied clubs. Follow TipsGG for continued coverage of Real Madrid and the stories shaping the game.
