Carrick Keeps Door Open for Rashford Return to Manchester United

Michael Carrick has not ruled out Marcus Rashford rejoining Manchester United after his loan spell at Barcelona concludes. The England forward, 28, has been absent from United action since December 2024 and spent last season on loan at Aston Villa before his current campaign with the LaLiga leaders.

Rashford has performed solidly for Barcelona this season, yet the club remains uncertain about activating a reported £26.1 million clause to convert the loan into a permanent transfer. This indecision creates a window of uncertainty for the striker heading into the summer, when he aims to compete for England at the World Cup in North America.

The forward retains two years on his Manchester United contract, which includes a reported 25 percent salary increase should United qualify for the Champions League next season.

Carrick’s Stance on Rashford’s Future

When pressed about a potential Rashford return to Old Trafford, interim manager Carrick told reporters:

“I just think there are decisions to be made in time, really, on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation. But at this point in time, nothing’s been decided. And it will be, because it has to be at a certain point, but at this stage, there’s nothing to say.”

Carrick’s approach reflects a pragmatic view of squad management.

“Certainly, from my perspective, whoever’s here, I want to work with, make the best out of and help them improve. So at the moment, it’s this squad of players, and there’s obviously players on loan, and whatever happens with that later on will happen with that later on.”

Champions League Push and Squad Developments

Third-placed United face Chelsea, currently sixth, on Saturday with the opportunity to strengthen their Champions League qualification position. Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo may return from injury at Stamford Bridge after establishing himself as a vital player under Carrick’s management. The 20-year-old’s career trajectory mirrors Rashford’s prospects—both saw their futures questioned under previous manager Ruben Amorim, yet have flourished under Carrick’s direction.

Defender Harry Maguire represents another case study in career rehabilitation at United, offering Rashford a template for redemption should he return to his boyhood club.
