Two Clubs, One Struggle
As the festive season approaches, Wolverhampton Wanderers find themselves anchored to the bottom of the Premier League table. With just two points from their campaign, they’ve gone 253 days without a win and conceded 35 goals. The outlook is grim, but they’re not alone in their misery.
Enter Brantham Athletic, a non-league side competing in the Isthmian League North Division eight tiers below the Premier League. Like Wolves, they too sit bottom of their table with a mere two points. Across the top eight tiers of English football, these two clubs stand as the only sides still chasing their first victory of the season.
A Shared Struggle, A Shared Hope
For Brantham, Wolves’ struggles have offered an unexpected silver lining.
“It does give us some comfort that we’re not alone,” said Peter Crowhurst, Brantham’s chairman. “When I look at Wolves’ performances and our own, we’re remarkably similar. Both clubs seem very close to success but are not quite there yet.”
While many might assume Brantham’s survival is already out of reach, Crowhurst remains defiant.
“I’m an optimist in everything I do. Every week we’re strengthening, and our management team believe in what they’re building. We still want to stay in this league. It’s our first time here, and we love it.”
Faith in the Process
Crowhurst’s optimism extends beyond his own club. He sees parallels between Wolves’ manager Rob Edwards and Brantham’s leadership.
“What Rob Edwards did at Luton in difficult circumstances shows what he’s capable of. I see the same qualities in our management team charisma, technical knowledge, and the ability to get the best out of what they have.”
The Race for Three Points
With both clubs still searching for that elusive first win, Crowhurst playfully sets down a challenge.
“That could become a national bet. I’ve got to say Brantham, haven’t I? We’ll lay down the gauntlet to Wolves and say we’ll win before you do, and hopefully that spurs both clubs on to a win.”
For now, the wait continues but for two clubs united by struggle, hope remains.
