Chilwell Aims for England Return After Chelsea Struggles
Ben Chilwell is determined to revive his England career after a challenging stint at Chelsea. The 28-year-old defender, now playing for Strasbourg, is focused on proving his doubters wrong and securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup squad.
Chilwell admitted he has a lot of work ahead if he wants to make the plane for the 2026 World Cup. However, England boss Thomas Tuchel, who Chilwell won the Champions League with at Chelsea in 2021, has indicated that his international hopes are not necessarily over.
Speaking before Strasbourg’s Conference League match against his former loan club Crystal Palace, Chilwell told BBC Sport:
What a story it would be if I went to the World Cup after I was in the [Chelsea] bomb squad and everyone had counted me out 12 months prior. It would just be the biggest middle finger to so many people, which to me is a motivation. Chelsea were honest with me and there’s no resentment, but of course I’ve got an ego, so it would be a nice feeling to prove some people wrong.
Injuries and Fall from Favor
Chilwell’s troubles began with a torn cruciate ligament at the end of 2021. He missed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after tearing his hamstring, and then fell out of favor at Chelsea when Enzo Maresca took over in 2024, becoming part of the Blues’ so-called ‘bomb squad’ of unwanted players.
Despite the setbacks, Chilwell remains optimistic. He has had conversations with Tuchel about his chances, who suggested that his international hopes are not out of the question.

Strasbourg Revival
Chilwell has found a new lease on life at Strasbourg, managed by former Hull City boss Liam Rosenior. He has featured in all but two Ligue One matches, with the club currently fifth in the league and among the favorites to win the Conference League.
Chilwell insisted that his move to Strasbourg was his decision, despite questions about the club’s shared ownership with Chelsea. He praised Rosenior’s leadership and the club’s ambitions, stating that the experience has reignited his passion for the game.
He also shared his admiration for the club’s young squad and the quality of the league, noting that Strasbourg’s cathedral was the world’s biggest building until 1874. Chilwell is learning French and embracing the challenge of playing overseas.
A New Chapter
Chilwell’s mother has been a significant source of support, especially since the loss of his father in 2023. He credits her for his resilience and level-headed approach to football.
Looking ahead, Chilwell is focused on performing well at Strasbourg and staying healthy. He sees the World Cup as an ambition but is content with enjoying his football, regardless of the outcome.
At 28, Chilwell believes he is in his prime and has much to achieve. He is determined to make the most of his opportunity at Strasbourg and prove that he still has a lot to offer on the international stage.
