Arsenal are preparing to launch a bid to sign Jules Kounde from Barcelona this summer, according to Spanish outlet SPORT, with the move contingent on the 27-year-old signalling his desire to leave the Catalan club.

Kounde’s Rise at Barcelona

Kounde joined Barcelona from Sevilla in a deal worth €50 million in July 2022, originally deployed as a centre-back at the Andalusian club. Since arriving at Camp Nou, he has been converted into a right-back and developed into one of the best in the world at that position. Across nearly 200 appearances for Barcelona, he has contributed 10 goals and 22 assists, and has cemented himself as France’s first-choice right-back.

Three-Way Transfer Battle

Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and PSG are all tracking Kounde with intent. Each club carries specific structural reasons for pursuing him.

Arsenal’s defensive unit has been stretched by William Saliba’s long-term back injury and Jurrien Timber’s persistent fitness concerns, while Ben White’s future at the club remains uncertain. Mikel Arteta is prioritising a versatile centre-back this window, and Kounde’s profile fits the requirement precisely given the club’s long-standing interest in the Frenchman.

PSG face their own defensive restructuring. With Marquinhos past 30 and recent reports linking both Illia Zabarnyi and Lucas Beraldo to exits from Parc des Princes — the former attracting interest from Liverpool — the Parisian side also lack a proven alternative to Achraf Hakimi at right-back. Kounde addresses both needs.

Bayern Munich have operated with makeshift right-back options and require a permanent solution in that position to remain competitive at the top level of European football.

Barcelona’s Position and Arsenal’s Advantage

Barcelona may be open to selling Kounde. The club is closing in on re-signing Joao Cancelo, and Xavi Espart has reportedly impressed manager Hansi Flick during pre-season, potentially reducing Kounde’s standing within the squad hierarchy.

Among the three suitors, Arsenal appear best-placed. Bayern must offload players before activating any incoming transfer, and PSG’s interest has yet to develop beyond the early stages. Arsenal’s position is more advanced, and if Kounde confirms he wants a move, the Gunners are ready to act.
