Liverpool supporters’ group Spirit of Shankly has called for clarity and a direct meeting with the club following reports that a consortium including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is close to acquiring a significant minority stake in Liverpool.
Sky News reported that Bezos is part of an investor group led by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of India steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, which also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Fenway Sports Group confirmed the approach from Bhatia’s group back in July, and Monday’s Sky report indicated the consortium was closing in on a deal for a roughly one-third stake, with FSG potentially set to announce terms as early as this week.
Who Is in the Consortium?
Bezos, 62, carries a fortune estimated by Forbes at more than $280 billion (£207.5b), making him one of the world’s wealthiest individuals. Saverin’s wealth is valued at $33 billion (£24.4b). Bezos had previously explored bids for NFL franchises the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders, but chose not to pursue either deal.
Spirit of Shankly’s Position
Spirit of Shankly has written formally to Liverpool requesting both more information and a meeting to discuss the implications of any ownership change. The group’s statement was direct:
“Putting the interests of LFC and its supporters first is fundamental to us all. The latest report of a 30% sale and the consortium set up to buy it is significant. The ownership and custodianship of our club is paramount to SoS and all supporters. We have witnessed similar sales at other clubs resulting in notable changes in the running of that club and football operations, leading to decisions and behaviours that many would not want to see at Liverpool.”
Context at the Club
Liverpool won the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season under Arne Slot, but the Dutch manager was sacked in May following a turbulent close to the campaign. Andoni Iraola is now at the helm as the club enters what could be a pivotal period both on and off the pitch.
With a potential ownership restructure of this scale on the horizon, supporters and stakeholders will be watching closely. Stay with TipsGG for continued coverage as this story develops.
