Antonio Conte has rekindled talk of a Premier League return, eight years removed from his Chelsea exit, confirming he would accept a mid-season appointment “if it’s worth it.” The Italian’s comments have intensified speculation around Manchester United‘s vacancy, with reporters linking his name to Old Trafford amid a stuttering start to the season.
Conte remains without a club since departing Napoli at the end of 2025/26, a campaign that began with Supercoppa Italiana silverware but ended in a second-place finish behind runaway Serie A winners Inter Milan. The 57-year-old discussed his next move with The Athletic, a decade removed from guiding Chelsea to the 2016/17 Premier League title, the club’s most recent top-flight crown.
Conte praised Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and PSG‘s Luis Enrique during the interview, pointing to England’s financial muscle as the primary draw. He argued that Premier League mid-table clubs now operate with resources that dwarf rivals elsewhere on the continent, framing the gap in blunt terms: top English sides are “using bazookas, while everywhere else they’re still using a pistol.”
The uncontracted five-time Serie A winner, who lifted the title with Juventus, Inter and Napoli across his career, has already been tied to Manchester United following a troubled opening to 2026/27. United crashed out of the EFL Cup against Brighton and won just once in their first five league fixtures, leaving them ten points adrift of unbeaten leaders Manchester City.
Conte’s managerial record in England speaks for itself. He posted a win rate above 60% across stints at Chelsea and Tottenham, collecting two trophies with the Blues before parting with Spurs by mutual consent while they sat fourth in the table during 2022/23.
Conte has generally resisted mid-season jobs, though his 500-day Tottenham tenure began in early November 2021, following Nuno Espirito Santo’s dismissal just 17 games into the campaign.
A Manager Searching for History to Restore
Asked directly about United’s situation, Conte stopped short of confirming interest but did little to dampen the chatter. He said he’s drawn to clubs “that have somewhat lost sight of their history” and is eager to restore faded glory rather than manage a side content with mere participation.
“I’d like to go to one of these clubs to dust off that history and make it shine once more,” Conte said. “Clubs where there’s pressure, where, ultimately, you know full well that you’re not going there just to take part, but to compete.”
“If you go to a club where the history speaks for itself, a history made up of trophies, league titles and victories, you can only honour that history in one way: by having the ambition to bring that club back, if it isn’t there today, to fight for those goals. I know full well that only one team can win every year, but I must carry in my heart, and instil in the hearts of the fans, my players and my directors, that spark, that hope that makes you say: we can win.”
Does United Fit the Description?
Manchester United fit that description closely. The 20-time English champions haven’t lifted the Premier League trophy since 2012/13 and have claimed the FA Cup only twice since that triumph, leaving a gap between the club’s history and its recent results that Conte’s words appear to describe directly.
