Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua survived a horrific car accident in Ogun State, Nigeria – but two of his closest allies, Shina Ghami and Kevin Ayodele, did not. The crash occurred when a tyre burst on Joshua’s vehicle, sending it into a stationary truck parked along the roadside.
Joshua escaped with minor injuries. The emotional fallout, however, has been severe. The accident unfolded just 10 days after his knockout victory over Jake Paul, a fight that underscored his enduring relevance in the sport.
“The accident happened as a result of a burst tyre on AJ’s vehicle, which caused the driver to lose control and the vehicle to swerve into the stationary truck parked along the road,” Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo told ESPN.
The Men Behind Joshua’s Success
Shina Ghami and Kevin Ayodele were more than support staff. They were pillars of Joshua’s career, shaping his physical preparation and mental resilience through years of high-stakes competition.
A sport and exercise rehabilitation specialist, Ghami co-founded Evolve Gym in London and worked with Joshua for over a decade. His expertise in musculoskeletal injuries and corrective exercise became critical during pivotal moments – including the 2017 heavyweight title fight against Wladimir Klitschko. Beyond boxing, Ghami consulted for elite athletes like Le’Veon Bell (NFL) and Draymond Green (NBA).
Kevin Ayodele, known as Latif or Latz, served as Joshua’s personal trainer and confidant. A devout Muslim, he brought discipline and passion to Joshua’s daily regimen. Hours before the crash, Joshua posted an Instagram video of the two playing table tennis – a now-haunting glimpse of their bond.
“With profound sadness, it has been confirmed that two close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, have tragically passed away.”
