Ajax have confirmed the arrival of 20-year-old midfielder James McConnell on a season-long loan from Liverpool, as the Eredivisie side seek to strengthen their midfield after a turbulent summer window.
Before sealing the move to Amsterdam, McConnell committed his long-term future to the Reds by signing a five-year contract extension an indicator of Liverpool’s faith in the youngster’s potential.
Having joined Liverpool from Sunderland in 2019, McConnell made his senior debut under Jurgen Klopp in 2023 during a UEFA Champions League clash with Toulouse. Since then, the converted defensive midfielder has made 13 first-team appearances and captained the club’s U21 side.

Ajax’s search for a new midfield anchor intensified after the exit of Jordan Henderson earlier this summer. Despite links to more seasoned names like Edson Álvarez, financial constraints forced the club to pivot making McConnell their second Liverpool loanee this window, following goalkeeper Viteszlav Jaros.
“James has a real winner’s mentality and will provide the necessary extra drive within the squad”
said Ajax technical director Alex Kroes.
“He’s been around Liverpool’s senior setup and knows the demands at the highest level. We’re confident he’ll develop well here.”
With Ajax prioritizing control and structure in midfield, McConnell’s ability to screen the backline and dictate tempo could prove vital. For the player, this marks a significant opportunity to gain regular senior minutes in a competitive league known for nurturing talent.
