The 2026 MVP Race: A Historic Showdown
Imagine a player averaging 34.1 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game. You might assume they’re a legend, a top-five player in NBA history, or a multiple MVP winner. But those numbers belong to Luka Doncic, who has never won an MVP and currently sits fourth in the race.
Doncic’s challenge? He’s competing against three generational talents Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Giannis Antetokounmpo who are rewriting NBA history this season.
A Season Like No Other
In 2005, John Hollinger introduced the Player Efficiency Rating (PER), a metric designed to measure production and efficiency. Historically, only legends like Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, and Shaquille O’Neal topped this list. A PER above 31 was rare until now.
This season, Jokic, Shai, and Giannis are all above 33, a feat never seen before. Doncic, despite his impressive stats, ranks 87th due to lower shooting efficiency. The MVP race is effectively a three-man battle.
Injury and Impact
Giannis has played just 17 of Milwaukee’s first 30 games. To qualify for MVP, he can’t miss more than four additional games. His on-court impact is undeniable: the Bucks score 126 points per 100 possessions with him and drop to 108 without him.
Shai and Jokic are nearly identical in impact. Shai’s Thunder become the best team ever with him on the floor, while Jokic transforms the Nuggets into contenders. The difference? Jokic’s shooting efficiency 60% from the field gives him an edge.
The Final Stretch
If not for Giannis’s injury, this would be a three-way race. Instead, it’s a rematch of last season’s duel: Jokic vs. Shai. Oklahoma City’s loss to the Spurs ended their shot at a record 74-win season, weakening Shai’s case. Jokic, with his historic efficiency, is poised for his fourth MVP.
One thing is clear: this era is the most talented in NBA history. Four unmatched players, each redefining the game in their own way.
