ESL Meisterschaft Spring 2023, is a B-Tier online and LAN german tournament, that features 12 german teams going head to head and facing each other for a total 53.000 dollars prize pool, and most importantly, a place on IEM Cologne 2023, and a place on EPL S18 EU Qualifier. The tournament will be played with the groups stage online, but the playoffs will be on LAN, and will start and end on March 2023.
The tournament features 12 teams, 6 coming from the previous tournament Autumn 2022: BIG Academy, Alternate Attax, Onyx, Entropy Gaming, Sissi Stake Punks and ex-Morekats; 2 teams coming from Autumn 2022 Division 2.1 and 2.2: Snogard Dragons and Epic Dudes; and 4 teams coming from Autumn 2022 Relegation.
In the Autumn 2022 Relegation stage, there were 6 teams, 2 coming from Division 1, 2 from Division 2.1, and 2 from Division 2.2. The 6 teams just faced each other on a single elimination bracket, without any second chances, you lose you are out of the competition, but on the first 2 matches, the teams from Division1 didn´t participate, they only participated on round 2, and the winners from round 2 got direct qualification, in this case Reveal and DIVIZON. Then we had a decider match and 2 more teams moved forward, Team Deftfox and Team KR Esports club.
Coming back into the Spring 2023, the format from this tournament has 3 stages, the play-in stage, the group stage and the playoffs stage. In the play in stage groups, both 12 teams will be divided in 2 groups with 6 teams each, and will be a round robin format play in stage, with every single team from the group playing against each other once, which means every single team will play 5 matches, throughout 5 weeks. All matches are BO2, so we will definitely have some tied games, and top 3 teams from each group will move into upper group in the group stage, and bottom 3 teams from each group will move into lower group, but without any eliminations yet.
Into the group stage we go, and once again is a round robin format group, which means once again, all teams will face each other once, but this time, 6 teams are in an upper group, and 6 teams are in a lower group, after coming from the play in stage, and once again, every single team will play 5 games throughout 5 weeks, and all matches will be BO2. All 6 teams from the upper group and top 2 teams from the lower group will advance into playoffs, but will advance into different stages, so the upper group teams will also have to fight for the best spot at playoffs:
- First and second placed from the upper bracket will advance into the upper bracket finals
- Third and fourth placed teams from upper group will advance intot he mid bracket semifinals
- Bottom 2 teams from upper group, fifth and sixth placed will advance into the lower bracket round 1
- First and second placed teams from lower group will also advance to the lower bracket round 1
In the playoffs, is where all it gets interesting, because we are on a triple elimination bracket, and all matches will be BO3, the first stage is the lower bracket round 1, and the 5th placed from upper group will face 2nd placed from lower group and 6th placed from upper group will face 1st placed from lower group. The losers will get eliminated, and the winners will face each other at the lower bracket quarterfinals. The loser from that match will be eliminated, and the winner will advance into the lower bracket semifinal, where it will face the loser of the match between the mid bracket quarterfinals, that will be played between the third and fourth placed teams from upper bracket. The winner from the mid bracket quarterfinals will face the loser of the teams that will play the upper bracket finals, which means will be the first and second placed teams from upper group.
At this stage, the winner from the upper bracket final will go directly into the Grand Finale, while the loser will still have to face the winner from the mid bracket quarterfinals at the mid bracket semifinals. The loser from the mid bracket semifinals will face the winner from lower bracket semifinal on a lower bracket final. The winner from that match will face the mid bracket semifinal, we might see here a revenge or not, but this will be a mid bracket final to decide the second spot at the Grand Finale. All matches will be BO3, and the winner from Mid Bracket Finale will face the winner from upper bracket final and the winner will get the biggest prize in money, and most importantly, will secure a spot at IEM Cologne 2023, and at ESL Pro League Season 18 EU Qualifier. Keep in mind that top 8 teams, which means the 6 teams from upper group plus the 2 top teams from lower group, so basically all teams from playoffs, will be qualified for the next tournament in Autumn 2023, while 9th and 10th placed teams, so the third and fourth placed teams from lower group will be sent into Relegation to fight for the last spots on Meisterschaft Autumn 2023.
