ESL Challenger at DreamHack Melbourne 2023 is an A-Tier tournament that will take place on the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia at the end of April, and will feature 8 teams that will compete for a prize pool of 100.000 dollars. However, there are several qualifiers to reach this post, and we are going through them.
European Qualifier - As expected, is the qualification stage that has the biggest number of teams, but to even reach the european closed qualifier we still have to get in the open qualifier, and on the open qualifier, 32 european teams will go head-to-head on a single elimination bracket, you lose you are out, all matches are BO1, but the qualification matches will be BO3, and out of the 32 teams playing, only 4 will be able to go to the closed qualifier. In the closed qualifier we will have 8 teams, 4 invited teams and 4 teams from the open qualifier, and those 8 teams will face each other in a double elimination bracket, where all matches are BO3, and if they get 2 losses, they will be eliminated from the competition. The winner from the upper bracket and lower bracket finals will get into the grand finals and face each other, and the winner will be the only one to get into the main stage of EC Melbourne 2023.
North America Qualifier - Close enough to what we just saw on the european qualifier, here there is also an open qualifier, but featuring only 16 teams, also going head-to-head on a single elimination bracket, where all matches are BO1, with the exception to the qualification matches that will be BO3. But from the 16 teams played, only 2 will be able to go through the closed qualifier. In the closed qualifier we will have 2 teams from the open qualifier plus 2 invited teams, and those 4 teams will face each other in a double elimination bracket, where all matches are BO3, and only the winner from the upper bracket final facing the winner from the lower bracket final, will go through the EC Melbourne.
Oceanic Qualifier - There is also an open qualifier to get into the oceanic closed qualifier, and the open qualifier features the exact same number of teams than we saw on the north america qualifier, 16 teams, and only 2 out of them will go to the closed qualifier. Once again, in the open qualifier is a single elimination bracket, where all matches are BO1, but qualification matches are BO3. The story also repeats on the closed qualifier, 2 invited teams, and 2 teams from the open qualifier, going head-to-head on a double elimination bracket where all matches are BO3, and the winner will get into the main stage of the competition.
Asia Qualifier - There is no difference here on Asia as well, open qualifier also with 16 teams, single elimination bracket with BO1 matches and qualification matches are BO3, both winners from the qualification matches will go into the closed qualifier, where they will face also 2 invited teams, and will go through a double elimination bracket, where all matches are BO3, and the winner will go into EC Melbourne 2023.
