Wolves Appoint Rob Edwards as New Manager
Wolves have confirmed the appointment of Rob Edwards as their new permanent manager, replacing the sacked Vitor Pereira. Edwards, 42, has signed a three-year contract after a deal was agreed with Middlesbrough. He becomes the club’s sixth permanent manager in four years.
Jeff Shi, Wolves executive chairman, stated,
We need to refresh the whole club with a new coach’s philosophy, bringing his own identity and ideas, and we can build on that. We are at a new chapter for the club and Rob will be a key piece of that.
Edwards’ Task Ahead
Edwards, who previously managed Luton Town during their relegation from the Premier League, now faces the challenge of preventing a similar fate for Wolves. The team is currently at the bottom of the Premier League table with just two points from their opening 10 games, still without a win.
Interim boss James Collins managed the team during the 3-0 defeat away to Chelsea on Saturday night, with Edwards likely observing the squad he will inherit.
Edwards’ Departure from Middlesbrough
Edwards’ departure from Middlesbrough comes just five months into his three-year contract. Middlesbrough’s official statement expressed disappointment, noting that they initially rejected Wolves’ approach but agreed after discussions with Edwards.
Edwards’ record at Middlesbrough includes seven wins out of 14 matches in the Championship, with an average of 1.86 points per game. However, his Premier League record is less impressive, with only six wins in 38 games, giving him a points-per-game ratio of 0.68.
Wolves’ Current Situation
Wolves’ squad lacks Premier League experience and star power, and financial constraints may prevent significant reinforcements in January. Edwards’ appointment suggests the club may be preparing for a potential relegation battle, with only 27 matches remaining to turn their season around.
