A consortium fronted by former Premier League striker Victor Anichebe is reportedly closing in on a takeover of League One club Bromley. The same group holds the power to rescue National League side Gateshead from liquidation, placing the former striker at the center of two separate ownership battles unfolding at the same time.
Anichebe Fronts Bids for Both Clubs
Former Everton, West Brom and Sunderland striker Victor Anichebe, 38, is said to be fronting a consortium in advanced talks to buy Bromley. Journalist Pete O’Rourke reports the group is already heavily involved in the club’s internal matters. Anichebe is also tied to a separate consortium still engaged with bottom-of-the-table Gateshead, who face being wound up over crippling debts.
Anichebe spent ten consecutive seasons in the Premier League, eight of them at Everton, and earned 11 caps for Nigeria. His company, Shoreline Limited, fronts the Gateshead rescue effort while simultaneously pursuing the Bromley deal.
Bromley’s Managerial Overhaul
Bromley gained promotion from League Two last season but currently sit bottom of League One. Manager Andy Woodman, who guided the club into the Football League and won the League Two title, was sacked at the end of October after five and a half years in charge. The club is set to appoint former Liverpool coach and Salford City manager Karl Robinson as the new boss, with Jermain Defoe serving as his assistant.
The takeover talks arrive at a turbulent moment for the club, with on-field results and off-field ownership questions developing in parallel.
Gateshead’s Fight Against Liquidation
Gateshead were reportedly given a Wednesday deadline before formal demands were issued against them. According to the Daily Mail, the club had seven days to clear outstanding PAYE and VAT payments worth over £200,000. Players and staff reportedly went unpaid for their work last month, deepening the crisis at the club.
The Waiver Standing Between Gateshead and Rescue
American private investment group Flacks Group could save Gateshead through a takeover deal, but the move is currently held up by Shoreline. The company attempted to buy Gateshead during the 2024/25 season and is now required to sign a waiver over money it claims is owed by the club’s former shareholders.
Signing the waiver would clear Flacks Group to take control of the club. Shoreline would then pursue its claimed debt from the former shareholders through a separate process, allowing the takeover to proceed without further delay.
