It is safe to say that no team defied expectations last week as much as SK Gaming did. On the flip side, it is also safe to say that no team stayed true to expectations as much as Team BDS did. This is a clash of the bottom two sides on the table but it does not feel like a clash of two teams in the same bracket ahead of game week 5.

Many people have speculated that the Team BDS preparation was inadequate, given the break that everyone had in the middle. That might be being a little charitable to them, suggesting that training during the break would have made too much of a difference to how they were playing before it. It did not appear before the break like this roster belongs together at this level, and that impression hasn’t changed after the break. They’ve only won one game so far – the upset of G2 Esports in game week 3, which has incidentally given G2 a 1-4 record after they began the season 3-0 up – and it would be an upset if they managed to beat any team at all from here on – even if that team was placed immediately above them on the table.
Their two losses over the weekend have extended their losing streak to five now, and with games to come against SK Gaming – the stars of last weekend – and an Astralis outfit that managed to beat Excel, it won’t be surprising if that streak hits seven.
At this point, only a miraculous comeback trail – like the ones SK Gaming seem to be charting – could help them overturn a win rate of 11.1% and a kill-death ratio of 0.63, which go hand-in-hand with an average towers killed metric of 2.9 that is not too far from being twice as little as the next worst team in the league.

One team that did use the break to train as much as possible was SK Gaming, and it resulted in some devastating performances last weekend where they managed to beat both G2 and Excel against the odds. It’s easy to get excited and predict potential playoff qualification after they’ve had a weekend like that, but that would be both ill-advised and premature. At the moment, there is still plenty overall that would need to change. For one, their gold differential of -1130 at the 15-minute mark is still a paltry figure despite two convincing wins recently. If you consider that they’ve won 100% of the time when they’ve been ahead at the 15-minute mark, the easiest conclusion to reach is the fact that SK Gaming are all-or-nothing at the moment; if they have good days, they are exceptional. If not, they can cut a sorry figure. That’s not sustainable over the course of a long season and they will need to think about that going into this game week; momentum is not everything.
